Key Takeaways
- Cypherpunk launched 4.2 GSol/s of zcash mining capacity through a $33.33 million transaction.
- Cypherpunk said its fleet represents about 18% of Zcash’s total network hashrate.
- Investors will watch Cypherpunk’s ZEC output, costs and warrant-related dilution after Aug. 18, 2026.
The Nasdaq-listed privacy technology company said the fleet is already operating and represents roughly 18% of the Zcash network’s total computing power, or hashrate. Hashrate measures how much processing power miners devote to securing a blockchain.
Cypherpunk said the acquisition makes Cypherpunk Mining the world’s largest active zcash (ZEC) mining fleet. The company acquired Z15 Pro mining machines and related hosting agreements through its new mining subsidiary.
The Deal Adds a New Way to Acquire ZEC
Rather than paying cash, Cypherpunk issued a pre-funded warrant to Winklevoss Treasury Investments. The warrant allows the buyer to purchase 43.29 million Cypherpunk shares for $0.001 each, based on a stated share price of 77 cents.
Mining gives Cypherpunk another way to obtain ZEC, Zcash’s native cryptocurrency. Miners run specialized computers that process transactions and help protect the network in exchange for newly issued coins.
The company said about 43,800 ZEC are awarded to miners each month. It expects mining production to help it work toward a goal of holding 5% of ZEC’s supply, potentially at a lower cost than buying coins in the market.
A Large Treasury Raises the Stakes
Cypherpunk already holds 323,394.38 ZEC, which it detailed equals about 1.92% of the cryptocurrency’s circulating supply. That makes the company’s financial position increasingly tied to zcash’s market price, security, and adoption.
The company argues that adding mining capacity can also support the Zcash network by supplying more computing power. However, the fleet’s reported 18% share also highlights how a single corporate operator can become influential on a relatively small proof-of-work network.
Cypherpunk said the mining operation complements its investment in ZODL, a Zcash wallet, and its broader effort to build privacy-focused technology businesses. Zcash uses cryptography designed to let users shield transaction details when they choose.
Kevin Zhang Will Lead the Operation
Cypherpunk appointed mining executive Kevin Zhang as head of mining. Zhang previously worked at Foundry and has experience building bitcoin (BTC) and ZEC mining operations in North America.
“Approximately 1,440 ZEC is awarded to miners each day, making zcash mining highly profitable. Even if the Zcash network hashrate increases significantly, zcash mining still out-earns AI colocation and bitcoin mining at today’s ZEC prices,” Zhang remarked on Tuesday.
He added:
“The opportunity in zcash mining shows a striking similarity to bitcoin mining in 2016 and provides exciting growth potential for Cypherpunk.”
Investors Will Watch Production and ZEC Prices
The next tests will be whether the machines maintain their reported uptime, how much ZEC the fleet produces and whether mining costs stay below the value of the coins earned. ZEC is up 7% over the last seven days, and over the past 12 months, ZEC has climbed more than 1,200% against the greenback.
Investors will also watch Cypherpunk’s future securities filings for details on operating results, dilution from the warrant and any additional purchases of ZEC or mining equipment. ZEC price movements could quickly affect both the new mining business and the company’s existing digital asset treasury (DAT) strategies.
