Morgan Stanley Among First to Adopt DTCC’s Tokenization Service

Key Takeaways

Digitizing Legacy Instruments

Wall Street giant Morgan Stanley announced Nov. 4 that it is among the first major financial institutions to tokenize real-world assets (RWAs) following the official debut of the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation Tokenization Service (DTS). The move marks a major leap forward in bringing mainstream financial instruments onto digital rails.

According to the firm, Morgan Stanley has begun utilizing the platform to create tokenized representations of U.S. equities and U.S. Treasury securities. By mapping traditional, highly regulated financial assets onto distributed ledger networks, the initiative bridges legacy settlement systems with modern programmable infrastructure.

The integration follows the official commercial launch of the DTCS on Oct. 28. Built to process securities held in custody by the Depository Trust Company (DTC), the tokenization platform enables institutions to issue and manage digital representations of assets securely.

When the DTCC rolled out DTS, which initially connects to the Canton Network and DTCC’s private Besu blockchain, the clearing and settlement platform outlined a clear vision centered on modernizing market infrastructure. According to the DTCC’s statements, the platform was designed to address structural bottlenecks in legacy trading environments by achieving three core objectives, namely enhancing asset liquidity and boosting collateral mobility.

The platform also aims to reduce operational overhead and settlement friction, allowing institutions to optimize how capital is deployed across trading operations.

Shift to Production-Grade Workflows

Morgan Stanley’s adoption highlights a broader macro trend across global banking: a steady migration from exploratory proofs-of-concept to live, production-grade operational workflows. Amy Oldenburg, head of digital assets strategy at Morgan Stanley, noted that the integration will influence how the firm builds out its digital asset capabilities as market structures evolve.

“The hands-on experience of integrating tokenized securities with established market infrastructure will inform the continued development of the firm’s digital asset capabilities as the market evolves,” Oldenburg said in a statement.

As major financial institutions like Morgan Stanley, alongside other early adopters, begin testing and deploying tokenized equities and Treasuries at scale, industry watchers view the DTCC’s DTS as a critical proving ground for whether blockchain technology can successfully scale within the plumbing of global traditional finance.
